I did a post on Monday about Spring riding conditions and precautions, since the weather has been so mild and there are a lot of bikes out on the road. Of course, the prevailing conditions created by the effects of Winter, and road work maintenance to counteract those effects, create some hazards for which you need to be extra cautious.
But, let's not forget that even after all that gravel is swept up and/or washed away, and when the chances of more snow or freezing temperatures is gone for the season, riders still need to exercise some caution while getting their 'wind therapy'.

- Ride defensively, and always stay aware of your surroundings. It’s easy for drivers in larger vehicles to miss motorcycle riders, especially if you’re in one of the driver’s blind spots.
- Remember to signal before turning or changing lanes, and use hand signal as well, as a way to make sure your message is seen. Of course, try to make sure that the drivers around you have seen your signal before proceeding, so make some eye contact.
- Don’t forget to dress properly for riding! A warm day can quickly turn cold once you hit the road and get up to speed. It’s always better to wear one too many layers than one too few. It's not much fun, and not as easy to concentrate on other things, when you're cold and/or wet and miserable.
- More importantly, your clothing can also be a safety tool. Wearing bright colours or reflective material makes you stand out on the road and gives other drivers an extra chance to see you when they might not have otherwise. And, of course, that gear is designed to protect you against injury should something occur.
- Ride like you're invisible is a good way to think when on the road, because too often you are to the average, inattentive driver!
Why ride this close to that pickup when buddy is obviously not focussed on his driving and what's around his truck. |
